The motorcycle was invented in Germany in 1885. In 1894, the first motorcycle was available for purchase in the United States. Early on, there were many manufacturers of motorcycles, but as time went by there were fewer and fewer. After world war I, Harley Davidson became the number one producer of motorcyles, till 1928. DKW took top spot, was the leader till 1951, when the BSA Group took over leadership in the motorcycle industry. NSU was leader from 1955 to the 1970’s when Honda took over the leader roll for the production of motorcycles. That position they still hold today.

Around the world in both the past and present, motorcycles have been linked to subcultures with notorious violent backgrounds. However motorcycles appeal to all different groups of people. The Harley Davidson has shown that the motorcycle can appeal to a wide variety of people. Motorcycles or chopper or cycles as they’re also known as, appeal to women as well, and many cycle groups ride to raise money for different causes. Motorcycles can be used as a means to get around or for a relaxing ride in the country.
